What are the warning signs of a possible slab leak?

Start here.
Unexpected water sounds, damp areas, pressure changes or unexplained water use can justify further investigation, but none proves a slab leak on its own. A professional diagnosis is needed to locate the actual source.
Possible signs that deserve attention
- The sound of running water when fixtures are off
- A floor area that is unexpectedly damp or warm
- New staining or moisture with no obvious fixture source
- A noticeable pressure change
- Unexpected water use that cannot be explained
Other problems can look similar
Roof or window intrusion, air-conditioning condensation, appliance connections, fixture leaks and drainage problems can all create moisture in unexpected places. A professional evaluation follows the evidence rather than assuming where the water began.
Safe observations you can make
- Note when and where the symptom appears
- Record whether fixtures, irrigation or appliances were running
- Photograph visible changes from a safe, dry location
- If you know how, compare the water meter only without entering traffic or a hazardous area
- Avoid opening floors or walls to search for the source
When shutting off water may be appropriate
If water is spreading quickly and you can safely reach a known main shutoff, turning off the supply may limit damage while you call for help. Do not enter standing water near electricity, force a stuck valve or use an unfamiliar utility control.
What matters here at home
Northwest Florida homes use different foundations, pipe routes and construction methods. The visible symptom may be some distance from the source, so property-specific diagnosis is more valuable than a generic checklist.
